Celebrating World Blood Donors Day 2017

For these last 14 years the world has celebrated a very important day dedicated to all blood donors. Since 2004 a good number of countries have been commemorating this day. The theme chosen for this year was ‘Don’t wait until disaster strikes. Give Blood. Give Now. Give Often.’

Another scope represented by the World Health Organization to commemorate this day is to recognize the generosity of these people who during the years offer some of their time to donate the most precious gift one can give. Their own blood.

In Malta this has been also recognized by Her Excellency The President of Malta Marie Louise Coleiro Preca were she presented a recognition award to 14 Blood Donors who have been donating blood and saving lives for quite a number of years. These were:

  • Ms. Carmen Filletti
  • Mr. Anthony Muscat

  • Mr. Carmelo Gauci
  • Ms. Mary Josephine Sapiano
  • Mr. Carmelo Galea
  • Ms. Maria Concetta Sciberras
  • Mr. Antoine Muscat
  • Mr. Raymond Busuttil

During the ceremony, a 27 year old Charmaine Vella who received a good amount of blood after a traffic accident told blood donors that if it weren’t for their generosity she wouldn’t have been amongst us today. Read more

This ceremony has been organised by the National Blood Transfusion Department at the Presidential Palace in Valletta.
